How to Make Excellent Gourmet Coffee
There are a number of simple things that can be done to make excellent gourmet coffee.
Use the right grind for the coffee maker that you are using. Fine grinds are used for espresso and some other rather exotic types of coffee, like Turkish coffee for example. Medium grinds are normally right for drip coffee makers or stove top espresso makers. Coarse grounds are right for a French press or if you use the cold water method of brewing. In general if the grounds being used are too coarse the coffee will turn out weak tasting and somewhat bitter. Contrarily if the grounds are too fine there will be over extraction and the taste will be off. In addition it is likely that grounds will get into the cup.
If possible use a gold plated filter because it will not have to be replaced, and it also will not take any essential oils out of the coffee being made like paper filters will.
Don’t let your coffee sit on a burner for more than 20 minutes.
Always use fresh water when you brew a new pot of coffee. You’re coffee can only be as good as the water you use.
Clean your equipment regularly to avoid letting coffee build up and cause later batches to taste bad.
Normally a six ounce cup of coffee is made from 2 tablespoons of ground coffee. For espresso use one tablespoon of finely ground coffee to make an ounce and a half of liquid espresso.
